Approximately a month after receiving unanimous support from the Santa Monica City Council, a pilot program for the Santa Monica Bitcoin Office has officially launched. This initiative is being rolled out without any financial burden on the city, according to officials.
Following the council’s approval, Santa Monica introduced a new section on its website on Thursday, Aug. 8, to provide more information about the Bitcoin Office.
The city’s administration is partnering with the Proof of Workforce Foundation, a nonprofit established in 2023, to educate residents and businesses in Santa Monica about Bitcoin and its transformative potential in the modern economy. The foundation is committed to narrowing the gap between emerging digital technologies and local communities by equipping individuals with the skills necessary for the evolving job market, thereby driving economic growth in Santa Monica.
In addition to its educational mission, the Bitcoin Office seeks to build partnerships within the Bitcoin industry to support Santa Monica’s economic recovery and generate new employment opportunities.
According to the website, the office will play a crucial role in facilitating strategic collaborations aimed at strengthening the local economy and positioning “Silicon Beach” as a leading center for Bitcoin innovation.
Following the office’s launch, a promotional post on X highlighted an upcoming event, the Bitcoin Peer-to-Peer festival, scheduled for October 18.

Santa Monica Vice Mayor Lana Negrete stressed that the Santa Monica Bitcoin Office program is focused solely on education about cryptocurrency rather than endorsing the asset itself.
Negrete added that the initiative is part of the council’s broader efforts to support the city’s economic recovery. It is anticipated to generate positive media coverage for Santa Monica and boost tourism, especially as the city prepares to host the annual Pacific Bitcoin Festival, which draws thousands of Bitcoin enthusiasts each year.
While promoting educational opportunities about cryptocurrency, Negrete made it clear that the city is not endorsing Bitcoin as an investment. The program’s primary goal is to enhance residents’ understanding of cryptocurrency, enabling them to make more informed decisions regarding its use and potential investments.
